Book Review: Earn It, Learn It.......

Title: Earn It, Learn It ..Teach Your Child the Value of Money, Work, and Time Well Spent

Author: Alisa T. Weinstein, founder of Earn My Keep, LLC

ISBN 13:978-1-4022-4207-6

Publisher: Source Books

Pages: 376

Parents have different opinions on how to teach children about money. Author Alisa T. Weinstein has one of the better opinions that I have read. She has developed a program that not only gives children a chance to earn an allowance, but children have the opportunity to learn about careers, financing, work ethic, work challenges, and most of all what skills and desires it takes to do the job well and to have fun.

Earn It, Learn It offers parents numerous examples of connecting chores, money and careers with the activities suggested in the book. It makes the experience of teaching children about money fun as well as interesting, and need I say, educational. Kids will be having so much fun and feel such a sense of satisfaction on allowance day that they won’t realize the life lessons being taught. What they will appreciate is the quality time spent with a parent and the control they have over their earnings.

Ms. Weinstein offers a book chock full of ideas and experiences that are most often free. Some of the choices a child may do are: make a vegetarian meal, decorate an apron, or develop a series of recipes all under the career title of chef. There are so many career titles to choose and so many activities that demonstrate work ethic and responsibility relating to pay rate or allowance that parents will actually learn a thing or two as well.

The experiences in the book may include researching different cultures and the jobs and activities related to that. It includes ideas about the arts, writing, researching and so many career titles that are not covered in a general education. And all the experiences lead back to the principles of working and earning, saving and giving.

This is a book where parents can take bits and pieces and make it work for the age of their children. It is an overall great bundle of ideas for kids and parents alike. I give it two thumbs up. My only negative comment would be that I wish the book had come out sooner when my children were younger. However, it will be a great gift for our grown children to have on hand when planning the allowance guidelines for our grandchildren. It is never too late to learn earning and saving techniques as well as giving and sharing with others.

I have not been compensated nor rewarded for doing a review of this book. The opinions stated are purely from reading the book myself. Any book or product review done for this blog is never compensated other than a promotional copy provided for review.

Become a Fan of Children's Author Ardys Reverman -Day 6 of the virtual tour. There has been so much good information about Ardys Reverman. Be sure to check out the websites and become a fan.

Welcome to Day 6 of the virtual tour for my books heart2heart and Turning Points. I hope you will become a fan of all my books. I love to write both fiction and nonfiction for children and teens and I'm currently working on my 24th book. Here are short descriptions of heart2heart and Turning-Points, just in case you haven't been following my tour or you've never heard of the books.

About the Books

The Friendly Universe Collection consists of four books that show children (and parents) how to better understand and bring out the best in themselves and those who matter the most in their lives. The poems, illustrations and insights are powerful.

Heart2heart is one of four books from the collection. In this book, parents can find out how their child’s special gifts make a good fit with others through a new SQ Personality Quiz. Being emotionally fit can give children (and adults) the strength to express their uniqueness. The SQ Personality Quiz in heart2heart is an easy assessment tool to enlighten and entertain while exploring human needs for relationships. A must read and DO to understand your personality and/or your child's personality.

Turning Points is another of the four books from The Friendly Universe Collection. Turning Points will take your child on a journey of self discovery. The book will help your child discover a NEW whole mind that will shape his or her world, guide your child to discover his/her promise, identify triggers that cause relationships conflicts, and understand his/her specific learning style. The book will also strengthen your bond with your child and help you learn to create win-win connections unique to your family.

Become a Fan of Dr. Laurie Zelinger and Her Son Jordan Zelinger- Day 6 of the tour for some fabulous authors and publishers on serious topics for parents and children.

Welcome to Day 6 of the virtual tour for the new book Please Explain "Anxiety" to Me! Simple Biology and Solutions for Children and Parents that I co-authored with my grown son Jordan.

Here's a little bit about the book: Please Explain "Anxiety" to Me! translates anxiety from the jargon of psychology into concrete experiences that children can relate to. Children and their parents will understand the biological and emotional components of anxiety responsible for the upsetting symptoms they experience. Please Explain Anxiety to Me gives accurate physiological information in child friendly language. A colorful dinosaur story explains the link between brain and body functioning, followed by practical therapeutic techniques that children can use to help themselves.

Children will:
  • learn that they can handle most issues if they are explained at their developmental level
  • understand the brain/body connection underlying anxiety
  • identify with the examples given
  • find comfort and reassurance in knowing that others have the same experience
  • be provided with strategies and ideas to help them change their anxiety responses
  • be able to enjoy childhood and to give up unnecessary worrying

Jordan and I are proud that our book is unique in its physiological approach. We respect the child’s ability to learn unfamiliar scientific information and feel that when it can be understood, the child will be better able to control the chain of events causing his or her anxiety symptoms. We take the same biological concepts found in scientific literature and explain them in such simple and concrete terms that even the youngest reader can absorb them. We think our understanding and respect of children is apparent, and the suggestions throughout the book are designed to elucidate the mind/body link and alleviate distress. A summary of our strategies is presented in rhyme on the last page in order to help children remember them.

I enjoy writing books with a message so that I can share my background knowledge with others. I am also a frequent contributor to the media, and am often contacted by journalists and radio personnel for my expert opinions on child related matters. Within the past few months I have been quoted in Parents magazine, CNN radio and website, the London Times, USA Today, American Baby and by an ABC radio affiliate. For years my priority had been as a mother to my four boys but now that they are all grown, I have moved my professional interests to the front burner.

Jordan spends his time studying and writing reports. He loves watching movies in his spare time.

Day 6 of the tour brings us to author Jewel Kats

Welcome to Day 6 of my virtual tour for my new book Reena's Bollywood Dream. Just in case you haven't been following my tour, here's what the book is all about:

Reena wants to be a star...

...A Bollywood star. Unfortunately, her family won't stand for it. It doesn't help that Reena is only eight-years-old. However, a beacon of hope arrives in the form of Uncle Jessi. He's just emigrated from India to America, and is a welcome addition to her family household. Uncle Jessi and Reena share a special bond. Not only are they old pen pals, but he recognizes her desperation to become a Bollywood actress.

One day, Uncle Jessi plans a secret surprise. He invites her to take part in a pretend acting game. Reena jumps at the chance. At first, she enjoys swinging her hips to Bollywood beats. She smiles brightly at his camera. However, halfway through her performance matters take an unexpected turn. The end results surprise both Reena and Uncle Jessi.

Important lessons come through an action-driven story and beautiful illustrations:

Children will learn that sexual abuse is NEVER their fault.

Parents and children will be given a launching pad to discuss the warning signs of "grooming."

Children will come away knowing they have the power to say: "NO."

Children will discover that sexual abuse can occur in any cultural group.

Children can be assured that they will be believed when reporting inappropriate behavior.

Therapists and parents can exhibit that sexual abuse isn't an off-limits topic.

Child abuse survivors will come away knowing they are not alone.

I hope you'll become a fan of the book. People who know me say my laughter and smile are contagious. I enjoy speaking with people from all walks of life. I always have business cards in my dainty purse, and they circulate as quick as a fly. Getting publicity for this book from the Indo-Canadian community has been tough. As I explained earlier, childhood sexual abuse is rarely—if ever—talked about. I’ve sent review copies to several local Indo-Canadian newspapers, and yet one has to bite with a review. I know I’m up for a challenge, but I have yet to back down. Mainstream media and public libraries have proven to be my friend. Please add me on facebook if you want to join me in fighting childhood sexual abuse. You’ll find me under the name of: “Jewel Kats.”

Writing Clubs and Blog Virtual Book Tours

I was making notes on an article about The Children's Writers' Coaching Club and what makes a club special. I thought over what I have learned in the years since I began my membership and discovered two things.
1. I have learned so much
2. I need to learn so much more.

Nothing new there, I think all writers agree that the learning curve never ends. However, it also made me realize that I need to be accountable not only to club assignments and club members. I need to be accountable to myself. Is this writing thing a hobby and an excuse to spend time at the computer instead of the stove? Or is my dream of becoming a published and paid children's writer an attainable goal?

The club assignments help with guidelines for goal setting. The critiques help me to hone my skills. The friendships made by opening myself up to sharing my work are strong and influential. But for me, the fear is still there. The fear of failing but also the fear of success. What if I do it once and can never repeat another good story line? What if no one buys my work? What if tons of people buy my work and I have to do face to face book signing gigs? How will I measure up to what others believe me to be?

The truth is I want to find out, I want to write, and I want it to be a full time gig.  And if you want to succeed at your writing dreams consider belonging to the CWCC or another group in your genre. It validates that you are on the right track for your dreams.

So be ready for a face to face with this author. I am a club member, I have many projects I am working on, and I look forward to a book signing in my future. It won't get any better than that.

Read a Paragraph from Cheryl Malandrinos- Children's Author

If you have been following the tour for children's author Cheryl Malandrinos, then you know what a talented and exceptional author she is. Here is an excerpt from her new book The Little Shepherd Boy.

Off in the distance, a wolf howled. Obed moved closer to his flock, scanning the hills for any sign of a pack that might race in and steal his sheep. His family depended upon the sheep for food and their wool for clothing. No sheep would be lost under his watch.

He shivered inside his cloak. While the days were getting warmer, the nights still chilled him. He walked over to the large fire blazing inside the pit. He rubbed his hands together and held them up to the fire to warm them.

Above him, the sky twinkled with millions of stars. Obed couldn’t remember a night so clear.

Suddenly, a bright light filled the sky.

Obed trembled. “Father, what is happening?”

His father dropped to the ground, his right hand blocking his eyes from the intense light.

Obed pulled the edges of his cloak closer to his face as he squinted up at the mysterious form hovering overhead. He shivered, but this time it was not because of the cold.

This book is a great one to add to your book collection for several reasons. It is a good story. Kids will love it.  And as one who also writes for children, it is an excellent example to help mentor those wanting to hone their writing skills. Happy New Year

As the day comes to a close I want to wish everyone a Blessed and Happy New Year. Fine tuning my writing goals for 2011 may find me making changes to the blogs and websites that I currently have. I need to keep what is working and stop what is not working to advance my writing goals of becoming a published children's author. Yet, I want to stay open minded to what other possibilities may present themselves in 2011.

I am a nurse. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. I am a writer. Now, like many of you I must find how to make all of my roles work together in a way that is pleasing to God and also helps me to achieve my dreams. I don't know how you feel, but I feel that if God has placed it on my heart to write for children than that has to be one of my goals. Stayed tuned in 2011 to see how I make these dreams come true. And please share how you are making your dreams come true too. Together we can help others to reach for the stars and work towards their dreams.

Welcome New Year.... I wish health, prosperity, and happiness to all who are in pursuit of their dreams.
